PORTUGAL GOLDEN VISA IS STILL THE MOST ATTRACTIVE DESTINATION WORLDWIDE

Portugal is still looked upon as a destination worldwide for families to obtain a residence card and enjoy visa-free travel across 29 Schengen countries by staying in Portugal for just 7 days per year.

The program remains a highly reliable way to secure a permanent future in Europe.

CITIZENSHIP:  Portugal has updated its immigration laws. While the timeline for full citizenship is now 10 years for most foreign nationals, which took effect for new applications filed after May 18, 2026.

• The Clock Start Reset: The time counting toward citizenship now strictly begins from the date your first residency card is issued, rather than the date you submit your application.

• Grandfathering Protection: If you already submitted your citizenship application on or before May 18, 2026, you are protected under the old rules and still only need to wait 5 years.

PROCESSING TIME:  The present processing time as of June 2026, with AIMA (the Agency for Integration, Migration and Asylum) Immigration department to obtain a Portugal residence permit, ranges from 9 to 16 months total from the date of lodgment.

THE RENEWAL TIMELINE: To maintain your legal status and eventually reach permanent residency, you must follow a specific renewal schedule:

• First Card: Valid for 2 years.
• First Renewal: Issued at the end of the second year and is valid for 3 years.
• After 5 Years: Once you complete these 5 years of temporary residency, you become eligible to apply for Permanent Residency (PR).
