Germany Residence Permit for Students

Residence permit is also issued for foreign nationals for the purpose of studying or for applying for a university place. A student will be permitted to stay for a maximum of nine months. Students who obtain university admission can obtain a residence permit for two years, which is normally extended until the end of the study. While the Students are studying, they may work up to 90 days or 180 half-days during the period of study. The students can also carry out part-time work, which is made available to students at the universities.
When the Students successfully complete their studies, the residence permit can be extended up to one year for the purpose of seeking employment. In order to receive a residence permit for taking up employment, however, the job must accord with the university qualification and it must be permissible for the job position to be filled by foreign workers. (This generally presupposes that the job cannot be carried out by Germans or other foreign nationals given precedence, in particular, EU citizens).
Also, there is a new development in Germany regarded positively by foreign students. The foreign graduates of German universities will have a year to look for a job if they wish to stay in the country. Previously it was quite difficult for foreign students to stay back in Germany after completion of their studies.
Residency for the Purpose of Vocational Education and Training
A residence permit can also be issued for the purpose of vocational education and training. This generally requires the approval of the Bundesagentur für Arbeit (Federal Employment Agency) unless determined otherwise by legal ordinance or inter-governmental agreements.
