SPOUSE / PARTNERS: On 28th April 2017, the Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) announced that Spouses and common-law partners sponsored application that has been lodged with the Immigration department will no longer experience a period of conditional permanent resident status. In its place, they will have full permanent resident status upon landing.
By eliminating the condition, the government advised that it was addressing concerns that helpless sponsored spouses or partners may stay in abusive relationships because they are afraid of losing their permanent resident status, even though an exclusion to the condition existed for those types of situations. The condition had originally been introduced by the previous Conservative government in October, 2012 as a means to deter people from seeking to immigrate to Canada through non-genuine relationships.
The removal of the condition had been probable for some time and in its forward Regulatory Plan released in October, 2016, IRCC stated its intention to change those provisions with the objective of speaking concerns that have been known, such as the helplessness of sponsored spouses.
Hopefully the Government will allow more newcomers to settle and join in with the perceptive that Canada is their long-term home.
PARENTS / GRANDPARENTS: Family reunification is a key immigration commitment of the Government of Canada.
The Government has made a number of important changes to uphold this commitment and made some improvisation to the program to the 2017 application process to make it reasonable and more clear. We can see the number of parent and grandparent sponsorship applications accepted each year for intake was doubled to 10 000 applications in 2016.
Also the Government announced processing times for most sponsored spouses and partners would be reduced to 12 months.
